The new single โBound To Youโ is a high-octane rocker fueled by loud drumming, forceful guitar riffs, and Nelson Labradaโs raw intensity.
The music delivers an electric jolt when plugged into both the 1970s and 1990s aural power systems! A sort of Led Zeppelin to Soundgarden journey. The live version was recorded at Bandera Studio in La Havana. Raw and unprocessed!!
Sumo has travelled through several genres since its inception in the late 1990s: electro, soul, funk, hip-hop, dubโฆ The band, which consists of brothers Alex (guitar, vocals) and Fred Sumi (bass, production), stays true to their original state of mind, instead continuing on a constant creative voyage.
The adventure continues with โOya,โ the 6th opus, which explores new boundaries, rhythms, and sounds. The band went into exile in Cuba, where two tours (Habanarte festival in 2016 and Cubadisco in 2017) resulted in memorable and deep friendships. Sumo teamed up with his Cuban soul brothers to form โSumo y Los Hermanos del Almaโ in this new voyage.
The end product is both enthralling and vexing. โOyaโ is afro-cuban rock musicโฆ Afro-beat, rock-fusion, latin-jazz, and afro-cuban soul vocals combine to form a kind of UFO.
This CD was created in its entirety: two weeks of recording sessions in Havana with a group of top Cuban musicians and singers.
Oya is a compelling album with multiple and different listening levels that will never bore music fans looking for new discoveries and adventures. Itโs no coincidence, by the way, that the album features such a diverse group of musicians: Ramon Plaza, a Chilean drummer who has been with the group since 2013, Wayne Paul, a legendary Jamaican reggae singer; percussionist Dunieski Baretto, pianist Maykel Gonzalez, and trumpeter Eduardo Bringuez, all three members of the legendary salsa group โPupy y los que son sonโ; singers Los Niches, who pioneered the new Cuban rap scene; and Nelson Labrada, singer and guitarist from the renowned rock group โMiel
