Guildford-based singer-songwriter Zachary Mason kicks off 2026 with โSweetheart,โ his eleventh single and arguably one of his most emotionally charged yet. At just 28, Mason has already built a prolific catalogue, with hundreds of demos, multiple indie chart appearances, sync placements, and coverage from major outlets, so heโs no stranger to momentum. But with โSweetheart,โ he leans hard into a glossy, 80s-tinged rock sound. Recorded in his home studio in October 2025 and later elevated by drummer Nate Barnes (Rose Hill Drive), bassist John Thomasson (Little Big Town), and mix/master engineer Derrick Lin, the track blends DIY spirit with serious pedigree.
The song opens in a wash of gritty fuzz, guitars buzzing with a warm, slightly hazy distortion. Masonโs voice enters high and breathy, almost fragile, with a delicate tremor. He sounds like heโs singing straight to you, no filter, no armor, just heart on sleeve. He sings, โYou break down when sheโs down, you want to make her whole,โ with a raw tenderness that hits home. Itโs not grandiose love; itโs the devoted kind.
Then, just when youโre floating in that intimate space, the drums come thumping in, grounding the track with a steady, confident pulse. The bass thickens the atmosphere, and Masonโs vocals begin to echo and swell, growing shakier in the best possible way, like someone overwhelmed by feeling. With a dreamy, inebriated devotion, he cries out, โSweetheart! / She is your lady!โ Itโs dramatic, sure, but itโs also disarmingly sincere.
โSweetheartโ wears its influences proudly. Thereโs a dash of classic rock romanticism and a shimmer of 80s arena glow, but Mason makes it his own through vulnerability. Itโs earnest, a little misty-eyed, and unapologetically in love. Sometimes thatโs exactly what rock needs.
