Efflore’s “椅仔姑” (The Chair Ouija) is a haunting piece of melodic black metal that blends traditional Taiwanese music with modern metal influences. The song’s intense and atmospheric soundscape is sure to leave a lasting impression…into the depths of your reposeful slumber.
The song opens with a spooky exotic, traditional rhythm that grows and grows and coincides with the metallic instrumentals until the cacophony of primal screams catches us asunder. primal high, cold, ungodly screams and thick grunting vocals rut together over the distortedly dark and suspenseful guitar riffs shredding the music and sending chills over the space.
The music is relentless and unforgiving, creating a sense of tension and unease. The vocals are raw and powerful, with Efflore’s gruff delivery adding to the song’s intensity.
The lyrics of “椅仔姑” are based on a traditional Taiwanese divination legend. The song tells the story of a little girl who was abused by her sister-in-law and forced to sit on a chair all day long. The girl’s tragic fate led to the creation of the Chair Ouija ritual, which is used to summon the spirit of the deceased girl.
The song’s use of traditional Taiwanese musical instruments and symphonies, Yue Qin (also known as the Moon Guitar) and traditional Taiwanese percussion such as the gong with an entire group for it to add to the live effect, add an authentically horrifying but exotic and intense touch to the music.
“椅仔姑” is a powerful song that shows how Efflore 白華 excels as musicians and songwriters. They have innovatively revived the Chair Ouija legend and spurned the excitement of those of us, who can’t help dwelling on spooky legends. Check out the song on Spotify.
