Composed by Richard Green, The Circle Closes is a narrative neoclassical EP, released this March of 2024. With Irene Veneziano on piano, Archimia strings quartet on strings, Green has crafted a record that breathes.
“Wrinkles” open The Circle Closes with an exuberance in the strings as they swell and heave with such dramatic fullness. Meanwhile, like wrinkles themselves, the piano keys patter on the smooth transitioning waves of the strings with a frolicking quickness that creases the pattern. The song itself flows with virulence and life which may be inspiring to some.
The intro follows “A Place Called Home,” which has a slower start and a mellower depth. Though, it carries a poise and a sincerity in its ascension. The piano retains its lightness contrasting the deeper strings. It precedes “A Legacy,” where the piano continues to glint buoyantly, nonetheless, the violins come grander with high swelling curves that majestically land in a rhythmic wave.
“Your Angel” has a sombre beginning. The piano notes are much deeper as they enter and the violin is more pronounced, though wailing more in a resigned and agonizing tone as if something has been lost or is in the process of being lost. The profundity of the song lies in its storytelling musicality. “Natural Circle” closes the Circle with a shimmering high string arrangement that uplifts the song with an exhilarating life-giving quality, meanwhile the gentle piano complements it with its stabilizing and balancing nature.
