Written and recorded alone in a small spare room with little more than a phone app, headphones, and persistence, THE COLOURS, the debut EP from Telford artist SI-KEY, transforms personal hardship into something surprisingly uplifting. Drawing from influences as varied as Radiohead, The Beatles, ELO, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, SI-KEY makes intimate music, exploring trauma, self-discovery, and the search for meaning while never losing sight of hope.
The opening track, “Colourss,” immediately establishes the EP’s emotional core. A soft, catchy acoustic guitar strum provides momentum while SI-KEY delivers his story in a conversational, almost confessional manner. His lyrics revisit painful memories of being bullied at school for being quiet. The story steadily evolves into something bigger. Backing vocals arrive to give the chorus an anthemic lift, transforming a personal experience into a universal reflection. The chorus, “Later you find out, nothing’s black and white now, open up your eyes now, what colours can you find,” serves as the project’s guiding philosophy. Midway through, a spoken-word passage broadens the perspective even further, reminding listeners that everyone experiences both winter and sunshine, hardship and healing. It’s a genuinely moving moment. But you will notice, in the next chorus, he changes the ‘you’ in the line, “ what colours can we find..” to ‘we.’ And that really connects us all, turning his intimate reflection into an anthem for hope.
“From My Windoww” shifts into a more reflective space. The acoustic guitar remains at the forefront, but the mood grows more solemn and contemplative. SI-KEY’s voice rises with tenderness and passion that makes the song feel deeply lived-in. A thawing guitar solo adds another layer of sincerity, speaking almost as eloquently as the lyrics themselves.
The EP closes with “Like Me,” perhaps its most immediately catchy offering. Built around a yearning for connection, the song captures a feeling most people know well: the hope that somewhere out there is someone who truly understands you.
What makes THE COLOURS resonate is its authenticity. Beneath its simple production lies a thoughtful narrative about pain, growth, and compassion. It’s proof that powerful music doesn’t need perfection—it just needs truth.
