Petrichor aren’t here to play nice—and “The Richest Witches of the West” makes that crystal clear from the first hit. The DC-based teen garage punk outfit channels the city’s legacy of sharp-edged, socially conscious rebellion, they take that DNA and crank it into something urgent, chaotic, and unmistakably their own. Fresh off the buzz of their debut EP, this single feels like a louder, angrier, and way more fearless level-up.
The track kicks off with blazing, gritty guitars that feel like they’re tearing through the speakers, quickly joined by thumping drums that refuse to sit still. Cymbals crash and sparkle in all directions, adding a kind of restless energy that keeps the whole thing on edge. It’s messy in the best way, you have controlled chaos that mirrors the frustration bubbling underneath.
Then Augusta Smith’s vocals come crashing in, and that’s where things really ignite. Her husky voice carries a raw, unfiltered intensity, swinging between accusation and outright rebellion. She spits, snarls, and lets loose with reckless abandon. She sings, “they keep us in darkness but really we’re staring at the sun,” keeping things poetic and confrontational.
As the song barrels forward, there’s a groove tucked beneath the aggression that keeps it from becoming one-note. It’s like the band is daring you to move while also making you question Trump’s administration and its raising havoc all over the country with ICE—and yeah, they pull it off.
“The Richest Witches of the West” goes straight for the jugular, tackling power, exploitation, and systemic injustice with a clarity that’s hard to ignore. Petrichor deliver a track that’s as explosive as it is purposeful.
