What happens when humanity stares into the abyss and dares to ask what lies beyond? London-based artist Antoin Gibson tackles that unsettling question on The Rise and Fall of Eternity, a five-track conceptual EP that blends alternative pop, dark electronics, industrial textures, and introspective hip-hop into an existential odyssey. Rather than serving up a handful of disconnected songs, Gibson builds a shadowy narrative about mortality, consciousness, and humanity’s self-destructive tendencies.
“Introduction to the Unexplained” sets the wheels in motion with immersive production and frustrated, rapid-fire rap lines tumbling over one another. There’s a palpable urgency here, as if Gibson’s thoughts are racing faster than the world can keep up. “Pandora’s Paradox” pushes further into uncertainty and consequence, while “Dystopian Empress” expands the record’s theatrical scope, confronting humanity’s darker impulses.
Things get particularly haunting with “Mirrors Behind the Smoke.” Opening with breathy sounds before heavy, swelling orchestral instrumentation crashes in, the track layers deep bass and thumping beats beneath an atmosphere thick with dread. Gibson’s vocals emerge with an ethereal, almost mystical darkness, creating a mesmerizing contrast between fragility and sheer sonic weight. It’s the sort of song that pulls you into its murky world and refuses to let go.
Then comes “Fortune Favours the Timeless,” whose folk-influenced landscape offers a striking change of pace. It leaves listeners pondering what death might mean for consciousness and eternity.
With its theatrical storytelling and genre-hopping ambition, The Rise and Fall of Eternity rewards attentive listening. The exclusive vinyl track “Shroud of the Obsidian Veil” adds another interpretive layer, too. Check out the EP on Spotify.
