Broken Castles’ new EP, The Smell of Victory, is a sonic assault that will leave your ears completely wasted and enthralled. This five-track offering is a relentless barrage of heavy riffs, pounding drums, and raw, unbridled emotion.
The EP kicks off with “It’s A Beautiful Life.” Stomping drums explode into a storm of gnarling guitars, setting the stage for a sonic maelstrom. The vocals are a menacing shriek, a perfect embodiment of barely contained rage.
“Line of Disrepair” throws down a thick layer of grunge. Smug guitar lines intertwine with pounding drums as the vocalist snarls about walking a dangerous path. There’s a sense of defiance here, a refusal to back down from whatever trials lie ahead.
“Weight of Gold” is a sonic sledgehammer. Heavy drums pound a relentless rhythm, underpinning primal screams that lay bare the emotional weight the protagonist carries. Meanwhile, “Deliverance” offers satisfying execution. The raspy vocals rage over a hard-hitting rhythm section, but there’s a sense of determination in the delivery.
The Smell of Victory closes with “Fuzz Brute,” a fitting title for a song that’s all raw power. Sharp guitar riffs cut through the mix, fueled by catchy drumming and the vocalist’s angsty war cries. It’s a perfect ending, leaving the listener breathless and exhilarated.
