Liya Shapiroโs debut single, โThe Thing,โ released on December 15, is quite a hypnotically unnerving thing. Step into her rendition of the post-punk genre that London-based singer-songwriter haunts and mesmerizes.
The song starts with a cinematic, slow, suspenseful, shrill, high, wicked-tailed old Hollywood horror movie-esque sound. The high-pitched, wicked sounds create an eerie backdrop, setting the stage for what unfolds. The pitch cascades and curves to a sloping downhill till it fades. And in comes drums that tap theatrically over revving low bass. Shapiroโs mezzo vocals, rich and deep in timbre, add a layer of enigma and contemplation.
Shapiro metaphorically refers to love as โThe Thing.โ Both enchanting and belligerent, Shapiro creates the menacing feel of our feelings unraveled from within. The lyrics are delivered deliberately, inviting listeners to unravel the complexities of this intangible phenomenon.
What makes the track particularly intriguing is its ability to maintain an immersive sense of suspense throughout the verses. As the brood progresses, an unreal, hypnotic, glitzy pulse vibrates, introducing an edgy and cliffhanger-like conclusion. The nuanced subtlety in the poetic sonic landscape created by Shapiro keeps the listener engaged, expecting the unexpected.
While rooted in Shapiroโs intimate affairs, the song manages to cut a cord with everyone. We all know and feel how love can cut. And yet we can dance to this intriguing song. I would prefer meditating to it mostly.
โThe Thingโ is a promising debut for Liya Shapiro, showcasing her ability to create a sonic and emotional landscape that captivates and resonates with us. Keep a watch for her upcoming discography.
