THE WHISPERING – PART 1 by Los Angeles heavy metal outfit The Whispering sounds like it was dragged out of some burning underworld ritual at three in the morning. Fronted by the enigmatic Lucian Fhor alongside a lineup stacked with metal veterans like Loic Colin, Tobias Kellgren, and Dirk Verbeuren, this four-track EP barrels forward with theatrical menace, technical precision, and enough dark atmosphere to blot out the moon.
Right from the opening title track, “The Whispering,” the band pulls you into a feverish dystopian landscape. Cryptic whispers creep through the intro before thumping drums and grinding distorted guitars explode into motion. Lucian Fhor’s voice cuts through the chaos with a sharp, eerie intensity, sounding equal parts prophet and phantom. Lyrically, the track hints at suffering, with references to mothers, children, tides, and fire giving the song a haunting emotional undertow beneath all the metallic fury. It’s timely, in light of the recent wars and such.
“Lie After God” keeps the pressure cooker hissing. Fuzzy, abrasive guitar tones collide with relentless drum assaults while Fhor’s piercing head voice tears through the mix like shattered glass. The song leans into alternative metal textures while still carrying the aggression of classic extreme metal, balancing raw chaos with tight musicianship.
“Pretty Witches” closes the EP. It opens with a whispered female voice before delicate acoustic strumming briefly lulls listeners. Before long, though, the guitars come roaring back with gritty force, and the song blooms into a darkly hypnotic anthem. When Fhor sings about “pretty witches in the shadow, bathing in the moonlight,” invoking the aberration.
What makes THE WHISPERING – PART 1 stand out is its commitment to atmosphere. Recorded with towering production but still packed with grit, the EP swings between apocalypse and mysticism without losing momentum. It feels grandiose, rebellious, and gloriously unhinged — exactly how heavy metal should sound when it has something real to scream about.
