Charting Canadian rapper, singer, and songwriter Dax’s “To Be A Man” collabs with country music legend Darius Rucker and cuts a cord even deeper than before into the struggles of men.
The song begins with a contemplative piano gently rippling in the back. The subtle but hard beats drop, taking the flow of the relaxing music deeper. The minimal instrumentals allow Dax’s vocals to take center stage with his poignant storytelling tone.
The lyrics of “To Be A Man” touch upon themes of loneliness, the pressure to provide, and the emotional struggles that many men face but are often unable to express. Darius Rucker brings the lyrics to life and elevates the song in the first verse, with his baritone voice resonating with a sense of wisdom and experience. Here are some standout lines that stick: “You might find yourself feeling all alone/Inside a house, you built that you don’t recognize as home.”
The chorus encapsulates the longing to be understood on an emotional level. The repeated refrain, “It’s not about how we feel but what we provide inside that home,” tells us exactly why our longing goes unanswered.
“To Be A Man” reminds us all human beings need to express their emotions, seek help when needed, and challenge the stereotypical notions of their genders.
Dax has already made a name for himself, often compared with the likes of Eminem. With Rucker with him on the show and the song revised, “To Be A Man” hits different. I find myself coming back to it even more. And so should you. On Spotify. Now!
