Joey Quinn, the mastermind behind Vanilla Franco, demonstrates remarkable talent and determination in his debut album, Traction, released independently on December 1. Before we get into the review, we should let you know that this eclectic Brit-Rock album was done by our one-man army, Joey Quinn. Quinn showed us how to wear many hats without much experience by becoming the instrumentalist, songwriter, mixer, videographer, and visual artist to create Traction.
“Building Pressure,” the opening track, sets a high-energy tone with its forceful Brit-rock instrumentals. The driving guitars and thumping drums create an upbeat force that complements Quinn’s hollering vocals.
Traction has an eclectic vibe, such as in “Good Time,” where we are intrigued by distorted guitar riffs blazing over consistently looping drums. We listen to the lyrics and find a rebellious spirit that’s just going to have to go against everyone to have fun.
The allusive track “James Bond” has a mysterious buildup with Quinn’s reverbed vocals against shimmering guitars. The singer once gets off on the rebel archetype with his James Bond archetype.
Traction’s lead single, “Learn Something,” is quite a catch. And having this to close the 9-track album is akin to leaving u starstruck and wanting more of what he got. The rhythmic and upbeat drum line grounds the song, while diverse textures, swirling immersive synths, and plucked electric guitar melodies engage us from all sides. The reverbed vocals, on the other hand, lend the much-needed space and hypnotism. The song is quite the full-throttle meditative entertainment.
By releasing Traction right before the year ended, Vanilla Franco shows us you got all year to work on yourself and make yourself proud. Check out Traction by Vanilla Franco on Spotify!
