Sixteen-year-old rising star Sloan Treacy returns with her sophomore EP, was any of it real?, and itโs safe to say sheโs not holding back. Recorded between Los Angeles and her new hometown of Nashville, the EP brims with intimate reflections, thoughtful songwriting, and a level of emotional depth thatโs way beyond her years. Teaming up again with producer Miggs, Sloan builds on the promise of her 2024 debut, Stuck, but this time around, sheโs diving deeper into the messy, murky waters of memory, denial, and fragile truths.
Right off the bat, โThe Good Partโ gets down with stripped-down acoustic guitar paired with pulsing beats. Sloanโs feather-light vocals carry this tugging vulnerability as she muses, โI think we mistook the feeling of falling for finally feeling free.โ That track, written on a whim before studio time, ended up stealing the spotlight with mature, contemplative, and philosophical lyricism.
By the time โMirageโ rolls around, things get hazier in the best way possible. With building guitar lines and haunting harmonies, the track floats like a dream on the edge of fading. Sloan sings with desolate, delusional, and confounded wonder, letting the atmosphere swallow you whole.
Closing out the EP, โThe Edgeโ pulses with adrenaline, echoing that uneasy thrill of stepping into the unknown. Itโs got this heartbeat-like rhythm pushing it forward, while Sloanโs voice wavers between hope and hesitation. Turns out, the song started as a school project, but clearly, it had bigger plans.
All in all, this diaristic revelation was any of it real? has evolved into a dreamy, introspective and wise coming-of-age record. Itโs definitely something we can get behind. Sloan Treacy might still be in high school, but her songwriting? Already top of the class.
