KARINA goes behind the veneer of normalcy to all the damages lurking underneath in her debut album what happened to the little girl? Released on February 29, the album perfectly represents what coming-of-age is like for traumatized individuals with the 20-year-old indie pop artist’s vulnerable and authentic voice and maturity.
Co-written and produced by Lawrence Grivich at Don of Pop Studios, the album opens with “rosebushes,” a track that sets the tone for the introspective journey ahead. With a pronounced guitar riff that builds KARINA’s soft yet high-ranging spectacular vocals, the music intensifies the emotional turmoil of unrequited love and longing that the song explores.
“morning” is an engaging track where KARINA delves into the suffocating darkness of sleepless nights with the relentless weight of nighttime blues and the longing for relief that morning promises. The slow and heavy piano sets a somber mood, juxtaposed with KARINA’s passionate and frustrated vocals.
Precursor to the culmination, we have the electronic version of the intro: “rosebushes – melancholy.” This version captures the essence of melancholy with atmospheric tones and moodier beats as KARINA’s euphonious voice blends seamlessly with the ethereal production.
The album’s closing track, “willow tree,” reflects on the loss of innocence and the inevitable passage of time. With revving guitars and clashing drums, KARINA muses on the journey from childhood naivete to who she is now as an adulthood.
