The DIY alternative rock artist, known for his cross-genre experiments, coalesces grunge with pop-emo in this latest track. Recorded and released independently, the song continues sammy.’s streak of collaborations and self-driven artistry, following projects with Caffeine Junkie and utautau. It captures their isolation and how it propels him to seek connection in their vast emptiness. It’s an anthem for anyone caught in the tension between giving up and holding on. Switching fluidly between English and Japanese, sammy. /REVERSIES crafts a borderless, bilingual aural field.
The track kicks off with gritty, grinding guitars, setting a tense atmosphere. The drums hit hard, like the pulse of bottled-up emotion about to burst. Over this wall of sound, high, despondent vocals cut through with tenderness and torment, singing like someone whispering from the edge of a storm, drenched in vulnerability, oscillating between soft murmurs and cries of desperation. The chorus, “What are you waiting for?” rings out like a plea and a challenge at once, echoing through the distortion like a question aimed at both self and listener.
