Seattle-based band The NightCry takes a further step into their brooding, poly-jamorous sound with their April 14, 2024, release, โWhoโs To Say,โ a track that binds together synth-driven atmosphere, heavy grooves, and raw lyrical bite. Formed in 2020 and cementing their lineup in 2021, the group pulls from the dark synth textures of Depeche Mode, the pop sway of Ace of Base, and the stormy edge of The Cult, while fusing their own instinct-driven, feeling-first writing style. It feels as much confrontation as it is confession, with the accompanying Harbor Island Studios video capturing grit and glamour.
The track opens with sharp, pulsing synths that slice through the silence, gradually thickened by a revving bassline and chiming guitar that shimmers like steel under stage lights. Then comes the entrance of Vincent Vaurnetโs deep and molten voice, cutting through the haze with a luscious darkness. His delivery is both restrained and fierce, drawing the listener into the songโs push-and-pull narrative. When he declares, โItโs a lot for me to take / Not a lot goes my way / Itโs at the point where I will break,โ the weight of frustration sits heavy, almost suffocating, yet undeniably relatable.
The chorus hits like a challenge: โWhoโs to say, ayy! Donโt ever walk away when Iโm talking to you.โ It reveals the complicated combination of dominance and vulnerability that underpins the track. He refrains, โWhoโs to say,โ reflecting the uncertainty of right and wrong, of who gets the final word when intimacy frays into conflict. The music drives home a restless intensity, urging listeners not just to hear but to sing along.
With โWhoโs To Say,โ The NightCry balances power and fragility in a single breath. This Seattle outfit is shaping their own stormy corner of modern alt-rock. So stay tuned.
