Why Can’t You Stay? by the indie folk band Revue, released on December 1, is a captivating exploration of loss through nature and folk, roots, jazz, blues, ethereal indie pop, and alternative rock.
“Love’s Executioner” opens Why Can’t You Stay? with shimmering guitar tunes in a soft, immersive atmosphere. The contemplative vocals convey a sense of defeat and melancholy, gradually building up to a climax with clashing drums and horns.
Following the enchanting opener comes the second track and the second and latest release from the album, “Downhill.” With a rootsy vibe, shimmering with guitars, jittering percussion, and gentle keys, the song builds engagingly. Loudon sings with an affective touch to the storytelling tone, giving way to the vocalist’s memories of her brother. Behind them, layered backing vocals haunt the melodies with rich vibrance.
Another track that caught my eye is “Solstice,” for its bluesy and jazzy vibe turning to alternative indie rock and tuning the flavors. Dreamy and hypnotic guitar grinds with splashing and crashing drums against Emma Loudon’s mysterious vocals singing with a haunting trail in her accentuation.
Gathering the tracks to a thematic close, we have “Gather,” featuring solo guitar plucking upfront to create a reflective atmosphere. Its steely isolated release sends a sad and lonely ripple down the atmosphere. The simplicity of the arrangement allows the listener to focus on the poignant lyrics and the raw emotion conveyed.
