Wisteria Beat Tape by Tujay: Album Review

Dark electronica is a stunning genre trending as of late, and talented acts such as Tujay serve as an inspiration. His album “Wisteria Beat Tape” is an ethereal journey with the presence of trap beats and weighty basslines. Avid themes such as cyberpunk along with retro house flow into Tujay’s musical pieces, and the sound of it all has a nice ring to it.
The album opens up to the wobbly bass of “Crescent.” The track has a distinct dark melody that arrives from its low-scale harmonies and Japanese-style synths. It sounds rather epic, especially how Tujay’s compositions pay homage to classic video games with the side-scrolling mechanic. At least that’s my take on the melody and I felt eager to hear more from the artist. “Lunatic” and “Wisteria” incorporate a heavy electro-bass that sets the tone for the album’s shadowy nature. There are also rap sections and solid beats that amplify the essence of trap. These aforementioned tracks echoed a cyberpunk dystopia where mercenaries hunt down corporate thieves, all the while wielding a katana under neon-lit streets. This notion especially comes to form when the bass drops initiate, leading to an otherworldly feeling.
“Ultraviolet” is a vivid electronica piece embodying a catchy tempo that’ll make your head bop. The main synth arrangement is minimal, but a hypnotic tune to hear. In synergy with the funky beats and basslines, this track, along with the album itself, makes a strong impression of Tujay’s melodic finesse.
