Atlanta, Georgia-based underground rapper, producer, and songwriter Master Wiz provokes thought through societal issues and introspective musings with his latest album, World Away. Fusing boom-bap hip-hop with live instrumentation, Wiz showcases his lyrical prowess and unique production style, delivering an album that is both dynamic and immersive.
The album kicks off with “Planet Killer,” where Wiz confronts the environmental crisis plaguing our planet. Against a backdrop of snapping beats and zooming synth lines, he delivers urgent verses that highlight the devastating impact of human actions on nature and the world at large.
In the title track, “World Away,” Wiz tackles societal disconnection, disparities in the world and the struggle for change. Over thumping beats and swirling textures, he delivers impassioned verses like this stand-out line, “But everything wrong in this world is alright now” to get us to reflect on the disconnect between different realities and the struggles faced by many.
“Vocalized Heat” explores the darker aspects of society, with Wiz delivering thought-provoking lyrics over theatrical and cinematic horns and electrifying hip-hop hooks. Despite the intensity of the subject matter, the song remains intensely enjoyable, drawing listeners in with its infectious energy and musicality.
World Away takes a satirical turn with the bop, “Cadillac Spaceship,” where Wiz skewers the materialism and opulence prevalent in society. Through smooth swagger and relaxing beats, he gets witty, especially with the chorus, “We in the Cadillac Spaceship, the new one/You, you couldn’t even afford the used ones.”
As his second album and pre-cursor to several records incoming, World Away is your perfect company for a fiery ride with Master Wiz.
