Bay Area-based band Everything but the Everything released an ingeniously addictive and sensational single, “A & B Sides, Vol. Two” this June 27. Upon reading the title, you know you are getting a two-in-one offer.
Thanks to Sophia Prise on vocals, Ian Dowd on guitar, Chad Roxxit on drums, and Izzy The Gent on bass you get edge, melody, alt-punk and a lot of insane charisma in this single.
The A-Side song, “Hotshot” kicks off with intriguing, punchy melodic guitar chiming then the drums rumble and cymbals shake, setting off a memorable beginning right away. As soon as the singer Sophia Prise starts singing, she takes all your attention and owns the spotlight. Her voice is gorgeously thick as she shows off her emotionally rich side. She is luscious, sultry and assertive as she pours out all her power and vulnerability while retaining her confidence. The riffs surround her with a dreamy new-wave aura, meanwhile, the drums get us nodding to the momentum.
While A-Side was strawberry sweet and sultrily addictive, B-Side rubs “Salt” on your wounds—in a good way. This punk-rock goodness is dark, fuzzy, intense, hazy and hypnotic. The opening rhythm with the stomping steady drums and the mysteriously reflective and suspenseful guitar lines creates an atmosphere that will transport you to the darkest dungeons. Then Prise commands the scene once again, her vocals more menacing as snaps away at the lines effortlessly. Her vocals soar like a clarion call for war and before you know it, you are hooked to the maddening, war-mongering vitriol that is this song.
