London-based singer-songwriter Nelda released a new album, Between Two Worlds just this July 31. Brimming with vibrant storytelling, this concept album undergoes the different stages of voluntary relocation. Nelda has given this album life, culture and creativity with several songwriters from different countries like Italy, Bangladesh, Ukrainian, etc.).
The introductory track, “Everything is Scary” is built upon a soothing piano gently flowing in. The bluesy moody jangly percussion brings it more bite. But, of course, Nelda’s thick, mezzo vocals with vibrant vibrato tie everything together. She sings with a deep yearning and an agonizing defeat in her voice as she describes the pain of dislocating.
“In-between Two Worlds” has a more catchy beginning as she sports a higher pitch and hooky lines. “Wish I Was Home” is more exhilarating and rife with relaxing imagery that makes you long for home. The rhythm is outright playful and catchy, while her vocals soar into the sky. The bridge brings the brass as it blows exuberantly following the rhythm.
“I Wouldn’t Be Me” is more introspective. Growth becomes its thematic centrepiece as Nelda sings of maturing through the changes in her life. She sings that she couldn’t be herself “without it all,” acknowledging the hurdles were simply lessons. The soothing guitar solo goes spectacularly with the theme and the piano.
Between Two Worlds comes to an end with the cinematic, mysterious and refraining “No Place Like Home.” She sings breathily as the brass echoes from the back and the percussion organically jangles and jitters. The backing vocals expand her vocals, surrounding her voice with an unearthly, sirenlike aura.
