Chris Murphy’s Seven Crows returns with “Amanda on the Bed,” a spellbinding instrumental, like a moment caught in time. As part of the upcoming Powers of Observation, this track continues Murphy’s exploration of what the electric violin can do when it’s pushed far beyond its classical roots. Known for crafting immersive, loop-driven soundscapes, he leans fully into that approach here, with no vocals, no clear roadmap, just pure emotional navigation.
Right from the opening seconds, “Amanda on the Bed” draws you into a deep, droning expanse that seems to stretch endlessly outward. It’s quiet, like the calm before something shifts. Then the violin enters, and suddenly the space feels alive. It is warm yet piercing, gliding, writhing, and occasionally shrilling in deliberate and instinctive ways. Murphy builds a sense of mystery that slowly tightens its grip.
The looping technique becomes the backbone of the track. A simple phrase repeats, then subtly transforms, layered with another evolving line that changes just enough to keep you on edge. It’s hypnotic, almost meditative, as it mirrors the way memory works, circling back, shifting slightly, revealing something new each time. Tensing up in that repetition, are emotions you can’t quite name but definitely feel.
What really hits, though, is the atmosphere. With a lingering sense of intimacy running through the piece, it’s as if you’ve stepped into a private moment, something tender, maybe even fragile. It nudges you gently in that direction, letting your own thoughts fill in the blanks.
By the time it fades, “Amanda on the Bed” leaves behind more of a feeling than a conclusion. It’s cinematic, like a memory you didn’t realize you still carried.
