Louise Distras is a high-octane punk pop musician making a triumphant return with her highly anticipated second album, “Beauty After Bruises,” released under the Ministry Of Love Records Department this 28th of April. With 12 tracks that delve deep into personal experiences, “Beauty After Bruises” showcases Distras’ growth as an artist and a woman.
The album opens with the poignant track “Truth in Your Lies,” which, with the facade of a love song, actually sings of the charlatans that try to veer lost women into their brainwashed realms. Her mezzo-soprano vocals range with Mick Talbot (The Style Council, Dexy’s Midnight Runners) on her keys and Gunnar Olsen (Bruce Springsteen, Miley Cyrus, Puscifer) on the drums.
“Time Heals Nothing” is a standout ballad that addresses the echoing semantics of grief and loss with suspense and the feeling of impending doom with the moment of truth flashing before your eyes. The lines, “Mother my love you smiled through the pain/ Mother you let go of my hand/ You were out of time/You never got to say goodbye,” build up to the crescendo, with the drums pacing faster with each note.
“Black Skies” takes a more intense and gritty approach, featuring guest musician Steve Ignorant from Crass. What starts like a commentary from a sports channel ends up with a philosophical dose of street opera shot with terror and desperation in Steve’s voice racing and rapping poetry right before the song delves into Distras’ evocative delivery.
Closing the album is “Keep on Trying,” a track that speaks to resilience and hope in the face of adversity. Distras’ heartfelt vocals soar over a melodic and uplifting backdrop, offering a sense of strength and determination.
