Houston artist Corey Morris goes back to basics on Before The Shine, an introspective EP that trades polish for personality and outside expectations for raw self-expression. Released July 30, 2026, the project is the first in a run of releases leading toward his forthcoming double album Free Shine II. More than anything, it is Morris reconnecting with a period when making music was simply about making music—alone, patiently, and on his own terms.
“Star Talks II” immediately sets the tone with shimmery, cinematic textures and tapping beats, while sultry female harmonies wail in the distance. Morris comes charging through the arrangement with a hard, fast flow, firing off sharp lines about ambition, pressure, distrust, fatherhood, and the determination to stay ahead. There is swagger here, but it is matched by flashes of vulnerability. He can boast about being “one of one” and chasing the next deal, then abruptly remind us that he has to pick up his son. That collision between the hustler and the father gives the opener its personality.
“Still Bump Field Mob” loosens the reins even further. Chiming instrumentation creates a bright backdrop as Morris raps with almost effortless momentum, sliding from one line into the next without breaking stride. The flow feels instinctive rather than forced, and the recurring refrain gives the track a motivational pulse.
Then comes “What Really Matters?”, where the EP turns inward. Morris settles into a more laid-back delivery while a frustrated male voice loops behind him, creating an uneasy psychological undercurrent. The lyrics confront loneliness, regret, money, destructive decisions and the exhausting business of trying to keep going when everything feels heavy. The repeated “It just doesn’t matter” becomes less a declaration of apathy than a weary mantra before he ultimately circles back to perseverance.
Recorded and written across different locations in Houston, Before The Shine feels deliberately lived-in. Morris waited until he felt ready to say each thing rather than forcing the process.
