Better Without Me by Carley Varley: Review
Carley Varley is an alternative rock artist, and her track “Better Without Me” will tug on your heartstrings all the while igniting the rocker spirit inside of you.
A song’s foundation may be laid with just two elements: feeling and tune. Carley Varley’s initiation into her singing is full of insightful lyrics. With the addition of drums and guitars, the song transforms from an acoustic tune into a full-on rock anthem. The lyrics are filled with emotion, and Carley’s soothing voice is easy on the ears. Her ability to identify what would resonate with you in terms of melody and rhythm is quite incredible. The chorus is infectious, and it’s clever how she uses its lines twice in the first few measures of the song. It’s an interesting and original twist on switching up the chorus at different points throughout the track. I enjoy the drummer’s use of unique time signatures, particularly in the way they spice up the track’s sequences by alternating the banging of the bass drum with some ticks of the snare drum. The slightly distorted guitar chords feel aggressive and powerful.
Carley’s singing captures the spirit of alternative rock, making it accessible to listeners of many musical tastes. The section around the bridge is full of emotion; you can feel the artist’s anguish and hear their inner thoughts; it’s stunning and really moving. The song fades out on a quiet piano theme, which is, in my opinion, a great way to conclude any piece of rock music.
