Birds of Paradise by Melissa Jones: Album Review

“Birds of Paradise” is a stellar RnB and Neo-Soul album by Melissa Jones. She’s got an enchanting voice and sparks up with each melody on the record. She instills some aspects of jazz too, and the cadence is just lovely to hear. In terms of instrumentation, each track follows a funky bassline and has an atmospheric synthesizer tagging along. Altogether, the soundscape is delightful to hear on a rainy day, and the vibe is just right alongside Melissa’s performance.
From the bass rave that is “Make it last” to the hip-hop style anthem “Mood Booster,” Melissa’s melodic attributes just keep on making a solid impression. When she sings, the exciting rhythms that accompany her seem to follow the narrative and enlighten it all the while. Apart from that, the natural facets of RnB and soul music are felt on gentler tracks such as “Take a chance on me.” The tempo has a certain sway, where the beats and basslines aren’t very swift, but balances the groove with the singer’s harmony.
“Unravel” is one of the more bolder tracks of the album. It follows an interesting rock pattern with guitar riffs and a powerful drum crescendo. But Melissa doesn’t back down, she only soars higher. For she gives us a performance that’ll make your jaw drop, and your soul crave for more.
