Second Idol seethes out a battle cry and a call to arms for women, non-binary, and trans musicians in the music industry in their latest single, “Boxing Ring.” Drenched in alternative rock, goth, grunge, and post-punk influences, this track is a visceral reflection on the struggles and aspirations of those fighting against the biases that plague the industry.
Dipped in alternative rock, goth, grunge and post-punk influences, the song begins with some gears revving in and spraypaint sound—vandalizing. The song hints at a revolution on the brink, just with the background sounds right away. The music video amplifies this with flashes of graffiti being sprayed over walls.
As the drums thump in layers to evoke that realistic appeal, the guitar riffs ominously, and lead vocalist Kate Olivia Farquharson sharply enters with a luscious voice dripping with anger and defiance.
In the chorus, Farquharson declares, “Turn me around/Hook me in/Spit me out/I am the one,” embodying the resilience and determination of those who refuse to be silenced or sidelined. The instrumentals rage like a storm, building a crescendo that anthems the spirit of rebellion.
Directed by Cameron Davies, you will find a very empowering and grazing performance of the band on the beach. Produced by Clayton Segelov at The Brain Studios, “Boxing Ring” represents Second Idol’s raw talent and uncompromising vision.
So, join Second Idol in the ring as they fight their way out of the industry’s circus. Find them performing this April 20 at WOLLONGONG ART GALLERY, DHARAWAL/WOLLONGONG NSW and April 27 at THE CATFISH, NAARM/MELBOURNE VIC.
