Journey beyond the veil with Mortal Prophets’ latest EP, “Brian Eno In Heaven.” This is a haunting and beautiful tribute to the legendary Brian Eno, helmed by John Beckmann.
We begin with a descent into the unknown with “Drowned Lands.” Relaxing yet haunting drones set the mood, joined by shimmering swirls of synthesized music swimming over refraining riffles building the suspense. A sense of mystery hangs in the air, a perfect introduction to the EP’s otherworldly theme.
“Mesmer on Holiday” is a mystical fairyland. Twinkling, mystical soundscapes meet an unsettlingly squeaky undercurrent, creating a sense of playful tension. “Swimming With Witches” picks up the intensity with compelling darkness. This track is a heady brew of mystical rhythms, distorted snarls, and a beating pulse.
“Fraulein Anna Sprengel” throws a curveball reflecting secrets of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Organic, thumping percussion injects a welcome dose of exotic energy, creating a breathable contrast to the swirling soundscapes of the previous songs. As the music builds, enchanting melodies and rumbling drums create a sense of anticipation.
Finally, we arrive at the title track. Soothing orchestration creates a sense of calm amidst the otherworldly mire. Complex undercurrents weave their magic, adding depth and mystery. Swelling music comes likes waves washing over the music and recedes back. Ethereal vocals of Dämmerungschor rise and fall like celestial waves, merging with the music in a warm, harmonious embrace. Is this what heaven sounds like? It’s certainly beautiful enough to be.
