Cabbagetown Mystery release tuneful new song ‘The Sea’
A poem was turned into music for the song ‘The Sea’. They made the decision to try something different during the Covid lockdown when they couldn’t get together to work: each of them would write a poem and send it to the other, who would then write the music to it. They took their cue from Bernie Taupin and Elton John, who always composed music over Bernie’s lyrics. Sean’s music was played over Kevin’s lyrics in ‘The Sea’, and Kevin’s music was played over Sean’s lyrics in Blue Jewel. Both of them are unsure of the song’s exact subject; it just sort of happened.
Although Led Zeppelin occasionally makes an appearance, Cabbagetown Mystery’s music is unmistakably rooted in the North American folk tradition, with echoes of Neil Young, Paul Simon, and Leonard Cohen. However, the guys’ harmonies and modern sensibility are always audible.
