Joy, or the concept of joy, is both hollow and touchable, in part because itβs something that can come in many forms of experience. This summer, Clifford has packed three minutes of pure joy in the form of a playful, poppy, energetic song called βCan we dance to thisβ.
Iβm not sure what genre would best describe this track. Itβs a brilliant mix of pop/indie pop with a strong jazz and R&B influence throughout. Clifford uses a secret recipe of ear-catching melodies, skipping piano, and snare drums to create a certain feel to the song that rests midway between the retro sound of the seventies and the ultra-modern sound of today. Every aspect of it exudes the vitality of youth when there are so many new adventures and opportunities waiting for you. Specifically, when writing this song, the singer was influenced by the so-called βdatesβ on dating apps nowadays, so he came up with the concept of βmaking a request to someone youβve never met yetβ. And he was pretty straightforward about it, singing:
βThis songβs for the one Iβve never met
I needed to get this off my chest
I dream of you nightly in my bed
My message to you is a requestβ
Clifford has once again established himself as a strong contender for the title of βperfect summer hit.β Whether youβre starting or ending your day, this single is the perfect feel-good song to add to your playlist. Can we get up and dance to this? Yes. Without a doubt, yes!
