Champion 2 by K.C.: EP Review
The westcoast-inspired rapper, writer and producer K.C.’s 2019 EP Champion 2 is his grandiose statement piece to the rap world.
K.C. introduces himself and the EP with the opening track Ntro. The track is a spoken piece with K.C. announcing himself the champion as his words echo and resonate with the listeners. This is followed by the grandiose old-school track I Am (New Mix). Deep bass, and lyrical flow, this track has all the old-school staples. Starting with the legendary excerpt from ‘The Godfather’, ‘A Problem’ captivates the listener with its synth melody and K.C.’s hard-slapping verses. ‘The Blue Race’ is a politically charged profound spoken word piece against police brutality and the racial profiling of African Americans bringing attention to civil rights movements like #BlackLivesMatter. ‘Blind’ is a hard-hitting gangsta rap track. K.C. brings back the grandiose tone with a slapping gangsta rap track ‘Damn I’m Great’. This is a classic old-school gangsta rap track with piano riffs and a slapping beat. Saving the best for last, ‘Wanna Be a G’ is definitely a highlight of the EP in my opinion. This track just takes me back to the old days of playing GTA San Andreas and blasting The Notorious B.I.G. as me and my homies cruised by.
Overall, this is a classic westcoast rap album with themes ranging from grandiose to civil rights. I thoroughly enjoyed the album and recommend it to fans of Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Snoop Dogg and classic gangsta rap.
