According to Jonathan Rosen, βThe Tunnelβ is about the desire to connect and the trepidation of actually doing so. βItβs about letting yourself grow toward someone or something, and understanding that going through some darkness is necessary in order to reach some light.β
βI know that thereβs a light at the end of this tunnel and thereβs a tunnel at the end of that light thereβ, as stated in the songβs lyrics explains how we all experienced the uncertainty and time-loop madness at the beginning of the pandemic in our own special ways. They were attempting to convey the idea that life is a never-ending process of change. We may look for the light at the end of the tunnel and enjoy it when we do, but we must always keep in mind that there is always another tunnel awaiting us. Another light appears at the end of that darkness, and so on. But by putting those changes in the context of our relationships with others, we can find consistency in them. While some songs require weeks of tinkering and adjusting, others come on like a lamp fully formed. Jonathan Rosen says βIt was simple for me to write βThe Tunnelβ because I needed to.β
