Berto groovily faces contradicting actions of lovers in their latest indie-pop single, “contradiction” released this April 4.
The song is soothing all-in-all thanks to Liam Manansala Reyes’s skillful production. You won’t even realize when you are getting high on a trance while jamming to the retro pop style groove, thanks to the shimmering synths floating like dreamy waves on your brainwaves.
The interception of the high voice ranging with the deep timbre is pure contradiction—done perfectly. It’s the perfect balance of dreamy delusion with serious reflection. The high range enchants us over the electrifying beats on the refraining chorus, “Contradiction Contradiction/Baby you’ve got the affliction,” gives us that exciting anticipation and highs and lows of modern love and its uncertain lovers. Meanwhile, the slower verses get us contemplative and help us see through the subject matter.
At its core, “contradiction” explores the end of a relationship and the frustrating experience of receiving conflicting messages from a partner. Written by Alberto Gabriel Paredes, lines like “All these words and actions / Ain’t adding like fractions” and “Your timeline has got no rhyme / You’re not clear so I’m outta here” highlight the confusion and dissonance experienced in the aftermath of a failed relationship.
As the diverse album tells us a whole story of a love beginning and breaking down, “contradiction” comes fourth in the tracklist and serves as a pivotal and climactic point of this chapter from the narrator’s life. Stay tuned to experience the rest of this love story with Berto.
