Bones in Butter is back with Cosmopolis, an album that plunges headfirst into the dark underbelly of society. This dystopian tale embodies and even satirizes the ins and outs of societal issues with unapologetic smugness.
Cosmopolis opens with โYou Just Drownedโ which turns from Milutin Kraลกeviฤโs smug monologue to the refrain of having lost it all witnessed by angelic, soulful harmonies and a darkly sexy soundscape made up of swaggering guitar riffs and pulsating beats. Water bubbling sounds surface as a writhing guitar solo portrays a drowning man, symbolizing the consequences of unchecked ambition.
โCosmopolisโ also tackles the horrors of war in โA New Generation, Pt. IIโ with eerie guitar riffs and relentless drums. Luna Skopeljaโs sultry vocals intertwine with Kraลกeviฤโs deep baritone, creating an atmosphere of chilling dread.
โTransformโ offers a glimpse into the allure of corruption with catchy melodies and a pulsating beat that create a sense of dark euphoria, perfectly capturing the seductive power of easy money. Kraลกeviฤโs sharp vocals exude a dangerous confidence, mirroring the intoxicating rush of joining the fast lane.
All these themes Cosmopolis handles, create a hollowness, like that on โI Can Love,โ a rock anthem with pounding drums, delving into men being unable to be vulnerable to even their women. The repeated refrain, โOh, believe me, I know what love is,โ is both desperate and heartbreaking.
Then we have โGoing to Cosmopolisโ bringing everything together broodingly with a steady, ominous drumbeat that sets the stage for Kraลกeviฤโs candid, ruminating, and laid-back storytelling. He portrays a destructive society with the lyrics, โAnything goes in Cosmopolis, where nothing really is what it seems.โ
