Detour by Brian Ross: EP Review
Brian Ross is a superb musician with a mind full of melodies. This is brought on by his acoustic hymns which are wonderful to hear. A rhythm arrives, and the warmth of his voice is felt. Ultimately, once you initiate the musician’s EP “Detour”, you’ll find yourselves at a delightful location where a gentle cadence will grant you shelter.
“Prelude”, is a chill guitar and synth piece along with soft vocal lines. And after its ambiance ends, we are greeted by the sensational number “Time, You Old Traveling Man.” Firstly, that’s a pretty poetic title folks, kinda pertains to the idea of musical nostalgia. That’s my idea, however, Brian had another narrative where he stated the song is about wanting to love someone right in front of you but being unable to because you’re losing yourself. Aside from the ethos, the music is just terrific to hear. It’s a charming fingerstyle-powered track with stringed layers and slight percussions keeping the tune balanced. The atmosphere is splendid, and it continued with indie folk tunes such as “Lovely”, which brought a blues guitar solo with it.
The resonance of LoFi acoustic is present in tracks such as “Words Can Describe” and “Loose Ends.” The latter track also includes a spoken-word segment and shoegaze synths. Both songs had a bit of melancholy attached, but it was soothing nonetheless. Our last stop, “Begin Again” will urge you to hear the EP all over again, due to Brian’s calming voice and the upbeat transitions that take form.
