YACOVELLI’s new single “Doppelganger” kicks down the door with a gnarly, distorted riff and doesn’t let up for a second. It’s a full-throttle, neo-grunge punk freakout that sounds like it crawled out of a Brooklyn basement, clawed its way through a Seattle thunderstorm, and landed straight in your skull. The track opens with a warped siren and then smacks you with cymbal crashes and snarling guitars. It’s messy in all the right ways—intentional chaos wrapped in a heady, high-energy soundscape that oozes angst, confusion, and a whole lot of swagger.
Vocally, Alex Yacovelli sounds like he’s singing from the middle of an identity crisis, dazed, possessed, but fully in control of his vision. The slurred vulnerability in the verses explodes into a chorus that feels like a punch to the gut. “Doppelganger” is a fistfight between the self and the shadow, an anthem for anyone who’s ever looked in the mirror and didn’t quite recognize who was staring back. The lyrics teeter between surreal and sinister, with lines like “Clone dossier / Deep state at play” and “One of us has to die today,” making it feel like a punk rock episode of Black Mirror.
The production’s raw but smart. It stacks layers of thick, fuzzy guitar against tight percussion, and just when you think it can’t get any louder, it does. Think Nirvana meets Muse in a dark alley behind CBGB’s. There’s also this dramatic, almost orchestral swell in the final chorus that makes the whole thing feel like a grunge opera.
Bottom line: “Doppelganger” is sweaty, unhinged, and totally addictive. And for YACOVELLI’s second single, it totally bangs. Check it out on Spotify.
