Drowning Within Darkness by Fang Su: EP Review
โDrowning Within Darknessโ was released on November 12, 2022, by Fang Su, an instrumental EP consisting of only 4 tracks. Fang Su is a solo artist who follows the electronic genre with experimental sounds and is influenced by Hikaru Utada, Susumu Yokota, Siouxsie, the Banshee, and a few other musicians. The album was produced in his home studio where he did all the creating and mastering of his craft.
โThe Comingโ starts off with a scary synth sound and then carries on into programmed drum beats with a little static sound in the background. It ends with a bang on the gong that resonates a little and thereโs a soothing sound with a scary build-up. The second song โSomberโ begins with a hip hop-styled beat and then comes the synth building up into a haunted feel. The changes that happen in this instrumental track are interesting with the composition that goes up and down in perfect harmony. โGod Save Usโ starts with a synth sound and then enters programmed drum beats and after that the piano tune plays, which is augmented yet a peaceful sound. Full of suspense, like a thriller movie soundtrack, this song has the capacity to keep the listeners captivated.
โTo Those Who Have Passed Onโ- the last track of this EP which sounds very interesting and fun. These softer tones combine to make a treble-heavy sound. The dreamy synths create a spatial grid of unique sounds. The full EP is very experimental and instrumental, which gives a beautiful groove with suspense and also peace. It was a treat for the ears and creates a soothing feeling all over.
