The lead track from Subtract, “Eyes Closed,” features ED SHEERAN reflecting on his toughest experiences. The British musician released the poignant pop song and accompanying cinematic music video on Friday. In the film, a large, blue monster representing his anguish stalks the artist as he makes his way from pub to restaurant. Just twirling around with my eyes closed because I can still see you everywhere. The chorus features a song by Sheeren entitled “Time is movin’ so slow/And I don’t know what else that I can do/So I’ll keep dancin’ with my eyes closed.”
In a statement, Sheeran described the song as being about losing someone and having the feeling that everything just makes you think of them and the things you did together. “This song is about losing someone, feeling like every time you go out and you just expect to bump into them,” Sheeran added. “You kind of have to take yourself out of reality sometimes to numb the pain of loss, but certain things just pull you back into it,” the speaker said.
The song’s pizzicato riff, which starts off pinging and swells to an octave-jumping chorus, serves as its foundation. In a cover story interview with Rolling Stone, Sheeran explained that the song was changed from a more conventional pop song about a breakup to specifically address his own suffering.
