Empire by Mulholland Jive: Review
The Irish multi-instrumentalist and composer Ben Mulholland’s instrumental funk-rock project Mulholland Jive has released its latest single Empire.
This grand high-voltage fast-paced instrumental piece was recorded in its entirety at Ben’s home using both real and midi instruments. Most of the Mulholland Jive songs were initially written for Ben’s secondary school students’ rehearsal. Upon seeing the popularity of these songs with the students, he decided to record and release them.
This complex funky jazz song radiates energy from start to finish. In Ben’s own words, “It sounds like what getting a perfect run in Mario Kart feels like! It has the high-energy and explosive sound that is quickly becoming synonymous with Mulholland Jive. Lively guitar hooks, blistering piano solos and infectious rhythms make this a track that refuses to be ignored!”
The upbeat technical piano melody, the fast guitar licks, the catchy hooks, complex time signatures, the tension in the brass instruments, the tight punchy hard-hitting drums, and sudden key changes all of these are arranged so meticulously, that if we have to put it in simple words for everyone to understand, we’ll call it jazz on steroids.
This track will surely be an instant favorite to anyone with an ear for instrumental music regardless of whether they like jazz or not. If you like the music of Snarky Puppy, you’ll absolutely love Mulholland Jive.
