“Ex Communication” by Cat Calabrese is a glitter-drenched gut-punch—equal parts anthem, diary entry, and poetic middle finger. From the moment her voice echoes like it’s bouncing off cold bathroom tiles, you know you’re stepping into a story that still stings.
Then the real her enters, upfront, husky and honeyed, letting the beat build beneath her like a pulse under skin. It’s catchy, but it’s also bitter. It’s emotional, but never begging. It’s the sound of someone mourning what could’ve been while fully stepping into who they’ve become.
Lyrically, it’s a masterclass in closure with teeth. She doesn’t just say she moved on—she explains, in vivid, sharp-edged lines, how she built this man from scratch, taught him love, and watched him become “someone else” for someone else. Oof. The chorus, with its male vocal echoing “My love is all I need”, almost feels like a ghost haunting the track, whether it’s irony or delusion, it hits like an aftershock.
But this does end up being a song about self-love with grit. Lines like “She loves you thanks to me” and “You’re the man I taught you to be” are blueprints of empowerment. Cat’s reclaiming her role in his story and re-centering her own but also feeling bitter about seeing them treat someone else better when she loved them better.
Nonetheless, the production keeps it punchy and cinematic, layering fast, danceable beats under raw, heart-on-the-sleeve vocals. With “Ex Communication,” Cat Calabrese is giving growth, grace, and glittered revenge, and we’re here for every beat of it.
