Berlin-based singer-songwriter Oskar Brandt makes his debut with “Now or Never,” an orchestral pop confession about love reaching its breaking point. Inspired by the emotional sweep of RAYE, Sam Smith and OneRepublic, Brandt builds songs like miniature films, pairing intimate storytelling with piano, strings and cinematic orchestration. His first single wastes no time establishing that world: this is music about heartbreak and uncertainty, but also about the stubborn little flicker of hope that refuses to go out.
“Now or Never” opens in an immersive haze, with Brandt’s tender, velvety voice immediately drawing the listener into its emotional tension. He sings with restraint at first, almost as though afraid that saying too much might make the fragile romance collapse. But beneath that softness, the pressure keeps mounting. His delivery gradually gathers passion, turning quiet yearning into something much more urgent.
Then the strings begin to pulse and swell, wrapping themselves around the vocal with increasingly volatile emotion. Thumping drums add another layer of momentum, giving the arrangement a heartbeat of its own. The music seems to teeter on the same precipice as the relationship Brandt describes: one moment suspended in uncertainty, the next surging forward with everything at stake. When the instrumentation expands, it feels less like a conventional pop crescendo and more like the emotional climax of a film.
That cinematic quality is no accident. Cellist Dave Eggar, whose credits include work with Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Evanescence, brings an especially rich dimension to the arrangement, while producer Heather Holley, known for her work with Christina Aguilera, helps sharpen the song’s vocal and emotional direction.
At its core, “Now or Never” captures that agonising moment when love can no longer survive in the grey area. Brandt sings of a romance starting up again, but the real story is the fear underneath it, the fear of losing someone precious and the courage required to choose them fully. Tender, tense and increasingly impassioned, the track turns romantic uncertainty into an orchestral swell of feeling. It may be a debut, but Brandt already sounds like he knows exactly where he wants to take us.
