1. Can you tell us a bit about where you come from and how it all got started?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT:ย Kory and Matt were both playing in bands in 2016 and rekindled the flame through a separate band and instantly caught up together and clicked. They both agreed to combine their efforts together & help influence change with their music
2. Did you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT:ย Most of the band has been primarily self taught in combination with formal and informal lessons.
3. Who were your first and strongest musical influences and why the name โDRAGONFLY EFFECTโ?ย
DRAGONFLY EFFECT: Breaking Benjamin, STARSET, RED, FIlter, Tool, Taking Back Sunday, 2000โs scene, numetal, (split major, other influences) Figuring names and the name came by surprise through conversation reminiscing about the riot fest festival and dragonflies everywhere โ was like the dragonfly effect. Upon further research of the term, the name just made sense with the movement
4. What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT:ย Recurrent themes we try to integrate are to think for yourself, be yourself, donโt be afraid to be different and even though it is always darkest before dawn, a new day comes and you are capable of ANYTHING. Anthemic, big, cinematic rock soundscapes, digital
5. For most artists, originality is first preceded by a phase of learning and, often, emulating others. What was this like for you? How would you describe your own development as an artist and music maker, and the transition towards your own style, which is known as METAL?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT: Studying those that came before, learning how idols did things and how they can be used for self.ย Playing consistently everyday. Getting comfortable with what it takes to be an effective artist. Picking a style and sticking to it.
6. Whatโs your view on the role and function of music as political, cultural, spiritual, and/or social vehicles โ and do you try to affront any of these themes in your work, or are you purely interested in music as an expression of technical artistry, personal narrative, and entertainment?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT: Ambiguous, push for positivity based on personal loss. Leave messages to be interpreted in their own way.
7. Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfilment as the amount of work you are putting into it or are you expecting something more, or different in the future?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT:ย So far so good, we will always strive to be better and to be heard by more people.ย
8. Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song? Do you usually start with a tune, a beat, or a narrative in your head? And do you collaborate with others in this process?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT:
ย I will normally start strumming chords on my guitar and wait to see what comes out. Depending on what emotions Iโm feeling at the time & the mood I am in will dictate if it is a sad, heavy, mix type of song. Sometimes I write the music then lyrics and vice versa โ Sometimes I do lyrics then music.ย I will normally construct an entire song from front to back & then we will do revisions and edits. My buddy does remote work as well with adding extra FX and such to the tracks every now and then.ย โ Matt
9. What has been the most difficult thing youโve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT:
ย Familial mental illness, loss of loved ones, pre-internet music, post-internet music
10. On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud, or significant point in your life or music career so far?ย
DRAGONFLY EFFECT:ย Matt โ Sharing stage with Breaking Benjamin on multiple occasions & getting to know Chad Szeliga on such a personal & friendly level. He is a fantastic friendย Kory โย Leg of warped tour
11. With social media having a heavy impact on our lives and the music business in general, how do you handle criticism, haters, and/or naysayers in general? Is it something you pay attention to, or simply ignore?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT:ย We always bear in mind, but it doesnโt affect us. Haters gonna hate. Lolย
12. Creative work in a studio or home environment, or interaction with a live audience? Which of these two options excites you most, and why?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT:ย Love recording but love the atmosphere and energy of performing live and conveying emotions to the audience. There is nothing like being on stage and letting everything out
13. Do you think is it important for fans of your music to understand the real story and message driving each of your songs, or do you think everyone should be free to interpret your songs in their own personal way?
DRAGONFLY EFFECT: Itโs super important to let the listeners interpret our songs how they want to. I would hate to come along and tell them what the song is about and ruin it for them -Matt
