Check out the exclusive interview below:
1. Can you tell us a bit about where you come from and how it all got started?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: Iโm from the Berkshire area and thereโs plenty of countryside to enjoy as well as my favorite thing, horses. I have been singing since the age of two years old, as I sang in my momโs car along to Etta James song At Last. I loved to sing as a child and would sing all the time. I developed a interest and passion for music at a early age. As I got older but still very young I began to write songs because I could always hear music in my head. It was like having my own private little radio station in my mind.
2. Did you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: I had a few lessons as a child but unfortunately we couldnโt continue with lessons because of financial struggles. However I didnโt give up because the gift of singing was already there, so I did as much studying as I could by listening to albums of artists my mom listened to. These artists were like the teacher I never had in a sense that I would learn so much just by listening. So yes Iโm self-taught with a God given talent or talents and gifts.
3. Who were your first and strongest musical influences and why the name โTANIA KYLLIKKI?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: There were so many from from multiple genres such classical, r&b, pop, jazz, and soul that itโs hard to say. However Whitney and Mariah were two of my many favorites. As for my stage name itโs part of my legal middle names.
4. What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: I want my listenerโs to feel better from listening to my music. I want them to be inspired, uplifted, empowered, and informed. I think my sound is organic, honest,ย intriguing and emotional.
5. What has been the most difficult thing youโve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: I have had many difficulties in my life from childhood to now. The past year and now has to be the most challenging due to my current health issues. Iโm a fighter, but last year and this year have been very difficult. However, I am doing everything I can to get through this while holding on to my faith. I have so much I desire to do and want to share.
6. For most artists, originality is first preceded by a phase of learning and, often, emulating others. What was this like for you? How would you describe your own development as an artist and music maker, and the transition towards your own style, which is known as POP?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: My process of writing and creating comes from the heart. Although you may be influenced by another, you can still have your own interpretation and perspective on how you process it. Emulating or simulating is a form of copying.ย I donโt want to do that, I have always wanted to be myself. As an artist, I have grown in a lot of ways over time through trial and error. Iโm not afraid to try different things inside of myself and striving to always be better, learning, and evolving. Thus, I donโt try to be anyone but myself. However, I donโt control what others interpret and decide to label me as.
7. Whatโs your view on the role and function of music as political, cultural, spiritual, and/or social vehicles โ and do you try and affront any of these themes in your work, or are you purely interested in music as an expression of technical artistry, personal narrative, and entertainment?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: Music can be used as a vehicle for those topics mentioned there. However I personally donโt get involved with them unless itโs something that needs to be addressed to issues for necessary change. Because everyone has a opinion and freedom of speech we live in a time where everyone is talking more than listening. However if a moment would arise, I have no problem using my music for that use.
8. Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it or are you expecting something more, or different in the future?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: Actually, I have been overwhelmed by the amount of love and support for all my efforts. Knowing that people from different parts of the world care about what I have to say is fulfilling in itself. I never expected this type of response, but I am truly grateful.
9. Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song? Do you usually start with a tune, a beat, or a narrative in your head? And do you collaborate with others in this process?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: In the beginning, before I met my husband, it was just me coming up with ideas. This was done in no particular order. Sometimes, I wrote lyrics initially from a melody and words that were in my head. Other times, I could be inspired by instrumentation. After meeting my husband, Iโll say that itโs was good to have someone else to share and put ideas together. The process has been very good.
10. On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: I have many moments Iโm so grateful for. One of them was during the pandemic, when I became more relevant for my music. Then charting in the top 100, starting at no.3 and remaining in the top 100 charts for 2 months via Amazon, for my first self-penned/co-produced debut album, โWhy Chapter One,โ These moments alone were awesome being an independent artist. Then this month, my recent music video for my release, โI Struck Gold With Youโ surpassed over a million views on YouTube in a month and over 2 million total between all the platforms my song is featured on. It was definitely a pleasant surprise, and I am still processing it. Iโm so grateful for the love my song has received.
11. With social media having a heavy impact on our lives and the music business in general, how do you handle criticism, haters, and/or naysayers in general? Is it something you pay attention to, or simply ignore?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: I think it comes with the territory. There will be people who support you while others will not. With that being said, I appreciate all the love and support from everyone because nobody has to be nice to you. Negativity can make you a prisoner of the moment being lost in what others think of you. The most valuable opinion is what you think of yourself. Therefore, I choose to ignore the haters and stay positive.
12. Creative work in a studio or home environment, or interaction with a live audience? Which of these two options excites you most, and why?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: Creation, whether in the studio or at home, is always an exciting experience. They both have their pros and cons. However, I do love being in the studio. For me, the ultimate experience is being in front of a live audience. There is nothing more wonderful than connecting with people in real-time and seeing their faces, hearing their voices and yours coming together for the common purpose of enjoying one another.
13. Do you think is it important for fans of your music to understand the real story and message driving each of your songs, or do you think everyone should be free to interpret your songs in their own personal way?
TANIA KYLLIKKI: When people know that artists story and can relate with them as well as have their own explanation of what the music means to them personally, I feel a bond is then created.
