Jackson Watson, a young and skilled indie artist, has carved out a unique musical niche for himself by flitting between modern pop, R&B, and psychedelic rock. “Feels Like Yesterday,” a soulful pop song by the Alabama native, has just been released and is well worth your time.
The acoustic guitar shines as the focal point of the song, while the percussion beat shifts and changes rhythms in a whimsical manner. It is also packed with multiple layers of harmonies, ad-libs, and vocal effects, all of which contribute to the overall entertaining nature of the sonic experience. The calm piano and strings in the background make a brief entrance, only to be replaced roughly halfway through the music. Some energizing synth pads and shimmering kalimba sounds are added to the mix, giving it a more modern and upbeat feel. Watson sought to give listeners the warm, welcoming atmosphere of a campfire so that they would feel comfortable sharing their innermost ideas and feelings. He explained the song’s inspiration: “Feels Like Yesterday” is about accepting the fact that you and someone else may not have a future together but the past will always be something to appreciate and remember.”
Quotable lyrics:
“So, honey, tell me if you want to go about your way
Nothing will feel as good as yesterday
But darling, I’m alright with you stopping by”
This is the lead single from Watson’s upcoming sophomore album, Numb, due out in October. We’re excited to hear what else this brilliant young musician has in store for us.
