Elia G’s “Flying” from the similarly titled EP brings an intimate heart-to-heart you didn’t know, would relate to you. Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Elia Giuliani teams up with producer Jeff Martin to turn simple singer-songwriter sketches into something a little more nuanced and vulnerable with that intimate, bedroom-pop charm.
The story behind the EP adds a nice touch of serendipity, too, with two musicians meeting at a coffee shop and ending up crafting an entire sonic world together. And you can hear that DIY spirit throughout Flying. It breathes, giving Elia’s storytelling room to stretch out and settle in.
The title track, “Flying,” is where it all clicks into place. It opens with soft, gently strummed guitar lines paired with a slow, steady beat that pulses like a heartbeat. Elia’s soft, diaristic voice slips in, like she’s thinking out loud. With an intimate confessionality, it’s as if you’ve stumbled onto a page of her journal mid-sentence.
Lyrically, “Flying” wrestles with that all-too-familiar tug-of-war between dreams and reality. Childhood promises of escape, getting out, becoming something more, linger in the background, while present-day doubts creep in. The imagery of seagulls, sea, and sky becomes a subtle metaphor for longing and limitation, especially when she admits that, what if “there is no sea in the sky,” maybe flight isn’t meant for her after all.
Still, there’s a quiet resilience woven in. The beachy undertones keep things grounded, offering a calm amid the uncertainty. “Flying” gently pulls you in, and before you know it, you’re right there, feeling every word.
