Alan Mair, best known as the bassist of post-punk legends The Only Ones, returns to center stage with his gripping new single โGhost of You in Me,โ released on August 25th, 2025, via IKA Records. Written, produced, and performed almost entirely by Mair, with only the lead guitar handed to the sensational Zal Cleminson, the song feels like a full-circle statement from a veteran still evolving. Mixing alternative rock with a dark, cinematic sheen, โGhost of You in Meโ channels love, loss, and the uncanny persistence of memory into supernatural themes.
The song opens with buzzing, pulsating layers of sound, a mix of grit and shimmer that instantly pulls you in. Then Mairโs deep, resonant voice enters, weathered with emotion, like a storyteller recounting a love that never truly left. His delivery balances gravitas and vulnerability, rising powerfully as he sings, โItโs better to have loved and lost you / Than never have loved you at all.โ Each word lands heavy, lingering in the air like a spirit refusing to fade. The rhythm builds steadily, the bass humming beneath a glowing wall of guitars, until Cleminsonโs soaring, haunting, emotive, and fierce lead cuts through like lightning.
The lyrics tread that delicate line between the spiritual and the psychological, evoking the feeling of being haunted not by fear, but by love. โAre you a lost soul looking for some refuge, or are you my sweet angel come to take care of me?โ he asksโa question as eternal as the ghosts that inspired it.
By the time the final chorus hits, โGhost of You in Meโ feels both otherworldly and timeless, a classic rock ballad wrapped in spectral melancholy. Itโs Alan Mair at his finestโsoulful, cinematic, and still burning with that unmistakable fire. Perfect timing for Halloween, indeed.
