Paris-based experimental collective Shooqa 22 crashes through genre walls with their daring debut single โIsgonnabeok (drill-jazz #2),โ released May 6, 2025. Itโs as wild, unpredictable, and hypnotic as its title suggests. Fusing drillโs dark rhythmic energy with the spontaneity of jazz and the melancholy of indie pop, the track feels like a late-night fever dream caught between anxiety and catharsis.
The six-piece band, discovered by the Grand Zebrock program, has already made waves with their genre-defying live performances at iconic venues like La Maroquinerie. But this single marks their first recorded statement, and itโs a bold one, dripping with mood, texture, and innovation.
The song opens with lazy, weary horns sighing into the mix, in the hazy cinematism. A slow, melody follows, rippling in a wave that flows ahead in an anticipatory suspenseful way, like smoke through a dim-lit club. Then, Karla, with her tender, rich voice, sings in a unique, hypnotic, eccentric way. It coils through the rhythm in a restrained manner, while maintaining a fragile balance between vulnerability and defiance. โI could fall asleep in your eyesโฆ just tell me itโs gonna be okay,โ she sings, pleading with both exhaustion and hope.
As the track unfolds, subtle percussive rustles and deep, droning basslines create a heartbeat underneath the floating vocals. Then comes the turning point โ a storm of bustling drums and writhing horns that crash together in the bridge, pulling the song into ecstatic, jazz-fueled chaos. Itโs part breakdown, part awakening. The saxophone solo dances and snarls over the drill rhythm, transforming grief into motion.
By the end, โIsgonnabeok (drill-jazz #2)โ reinvents the conversation between the genres. Itโs fearless, beautiful, and entirely its own language.
