French-British multimedia maverick Henry Chebaane, under the musical alias LX8, is back with a hypnotic Afro House remix of his breakout track “Ghosts of Sound.” Part of his upcoming double LP Ghosts of Sound, this banger is a chapter from an ever-expanding universe tied to his acclaimed graphic novel series The Panharmonion Chronicles. Yeah, you heard right — this is music that literally tells a story across mediums.
The song opens with thumping tribal drums, grounding the listener in its Afro House roots, while a smooth melodic techno line floats dreamily above. Meanwhile, atmospheric layers sneak in and out, portraying a shifting, cinematic soundscape. Elegant piano chords wander through the mix, then come the soothing, magnetic harmonies, leading up to a rich, velvety female vocal that wraps itself around you like velvet at dusk. Her voice aches and soars with a haunting profundity. By the time the bridge hits, the whole thing climbs into a euphoric, almost spiritual plane, like sunrise after a stormy night.
On top of that, there’s the lore. This track is tied directly to Ghosts of Sound, the second volume of Chebaane’s novel series, due this winter. In it, the protagonist Alex Campbell, a DJ with buried supernatural powers, travels to the 19th century to rally immigrants against imperial forces using electronic dance music. It’s wild, it’s bold, and somehow it all just works.
If John Carpenter’s synth-scored thrillers had a younger, club-hopping cousin with a taste for trance and house, it might sound like this. Listen to LX8’s “Ghosts of Sound” on Spotify.
