Groovy Avocado Disco by Unfortunately Stevenson: Album Review
LA Experimental Rock artist and multi-instrumentalist Steven Ramirez, who goes by the name of Unfortunately Steven, portrays a groovy and unapologetically brave picture of his own mental health with his debut concept album, Groovy Avocado Disco.
For many people, the concept of being open about your mental health struggles is still taboo let alone making songs about it. But not to Steven. He paints a vivid picture of his Generalized Anxiety Disorder with his concept album Groovy Avocado Disco. He not only wears his heart on his sleeves in his songs but also by including excerpts of his therapy sessions he promotes mental health awareness and encourages people who are struggling with it to seek help.
It’s not every day we see debut albums being concept albums and that too is something of this brilliance. It is an experimental rock album drawing elements from jazz, swing, disco, rock and fusion. The album is full of technical jazzy jams, emotional verses and catchy hooks. The excerpt of the therapy sessions in between the songs adds an unapologetically emotional and theatrical flair to the storytelling. This album truly is an artful and articulate representation of the artist’s vulnerabilities in a groovy fashion.
