What should a country rock song called “Haunted House” sound like? Well, if that doesn’t pique your imagination, tell me what should it sound like when the haunted house is your mind and body, when everything pops up all at once or one after another, just like a ghost?
Oli Ng says, “For me, the song is really about having that battle with your own mind and your head sometimes feeling like a Haunted House, not knowing what it’s going to throw at you next or what sort of scary things are going to creep up on you.”
Our minds may be the ultimate poltegeist that we can’t escape from, and Oli Ng has depicted the emotional and mental turmoil vividly through his descriptive lyrics and bona fide delivery.
He gives us a window into his turmoil with his lyrics: “Shaking like a leech/ I feel sick as a dog/ Cause I am all out of luck now/ I don’t know how I go on.” For those who are unaware, he shows mental illness is also physical, and it affects all parts of us.
As the song progresses to the chorus, Oli Ng sings along with the bass line, creating a second layer, each flowing symmetrically. He questions whether the other person is ready to put up with his troubles and stay through the whole ride because he feels like a burden. He further sings with his husky voice soaring: “Are you ready to, ready to put it all on the line?” If that doesn’t relate to someone with mental illness, then what should? What could?
Give “Haunted House” by Oli Ng a listen if you want to feel related to, for once!
